When you’re good, bad things can still happen. And if you’re bad, you can still be lucky.

“ Iknow what happened,” he said. “I’ve always wondered if you knew, too.”

He’d never lied to her like this before. Never sworn on a lie. He couldn’t remember her ever asking him to swear he was being truthful. All of this was new. And he needed to sell it, to keep her innocent. “I swear,” he said.

I can’t say I’m surprised, but it is still intriguing

His sagging skin and ill coloring were a distraction; a fortuitous ruse on his part, but she knew what he was. A cop was always a cop: retired or not, dying or not. The detective had been babying Nick. Just like Tony. Just like everyone who talked to him about this goddamn case. They were treating him like he was a child. And it was working. Every time he had to talk about the case, he felt himself sink backward, further away from the man he’d been before that night.

She was choosing her words like a politician, or maybe a lawyer. Either job would be ugly on her.

Ogranęło mnie przerażenie. Myślałem tylko o tym, żeby się wyrwać, uciec z peronu. Gdy trzymaliśmy się w objęciach, przed oczami świat mi się rozpadał na połyskliwe, pływające w powietrzu plamki, oślepiające odłamki kolorowego szkła. Przez chwilę miałem ochotę przewrócić go na ziemię, wkopać pod koła pociągu, żeby zgniotły go na miazgę. Żeby przestał istnieć. Zamiast tego położyłem dłonie na jego kościstych ramionach.
