At a certain point when do Johnny Dixon's family and friends start strip searching him before and after out of state vacations to make sure he's not concealing some cursed trinket on his person and not telling them about it?

Ok, re-reading this as an adult it is a little disturbing that Johnny's dad is like, "eh I'm the only adult raising this child, but oooh I get to be a fighter pilot and bomb some probably unarmed Koreans. Thanks senior citizen Mom and Dad!"

I'm getting really tired of Thorn, the latest iteration of extremely emotionally withholding, incredibly controlling male YA love interest. I am not sure why we're supposed to want these two characters to be together.

Not a huge fan of one of the first scenes being a white cop reading a black boy a lecture about how he needs to be nice his mom.

Ok, on the reread, Fawcett like many totally borks the academic structure. Profs at Cambridge are not called profs they are called lecturers. Adjunct professors are contingent instructors (generally speaking) in N America and as contingent instructors don't get to take time off and don't have research funding.

Excellent expressions in this book: squeeze-crab (a puny fellow), to live under the sign of the cat's foot (to be henpecked), and to squeak beef (to snitch).

I don't really understand why people decide that a mystery NEEDS to have characters who are all sociopaths. It's not more mysterious. It's just annoying.

Who in their right mind thought that a novel in which there is one male main character and literally 95% of everyone else is a woman would be best narrated by a male voice actor?!

Ok, while I don't agree that Heyer and Austen are very similar, this very early (1935) novel does read essentially like Austen fan fiction.

Why do I feel like "redbone coonhound" if one dug a bit below the surface would turn out to be a racist term?

I am really irritated that this series has tricked me into reading a series about the invasion/occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan from the colonizer's perspective.

It is very funny to me that the narrator of the audiobook decided that for the character "from a neighboring country" foreign = New Yawk.

I am not sure how the author, the editor, and the copy editor never googled "are there postcolonial studies departments." I believe the word Chou is looking for is Ethnic Studies department.

Ok, I get that it's a satire, but naming an actual human woman Cixi is really too much.

Chou references the poet Xiao-Wen Chou as a "Chinese Robert Frost" it's an interesting thought experiment. While I think there are a few black poets who have possibly made it into the American canon to the level of Frost (i.e. obligatory high school read) Hughes and Brooks come to mind, I am not sure that there has been a Chinese American poet who has made it there.

unfortunately started this before I realized Clarion is a Harper imprint. Enjoying it so far, but won't read or review until Harper Collins workers approve a contract.

Already a 18 year old princess is reluctantly married to a 30 year old man who is supposed to have been in love with her for THREE YEARS after she, a 15 year old child, smiled at him one time. Also how is a 30 year old marrying an 18 year old "young". Gross.
