Reading about women this male-centred makes me want to scream

It's absolutely wild that this book has a murder-suicide within the first 50 pages lol

I'm surprised it took so long for the word "quadroon" to appear in this book lol

I find the racial politics in this book...odd. Senna has pages and pages of how hard it is to be "mulatto" in America but any non-biracial black characters are openly disparaged. Senna is definitely giving the vibe of the typical, white passing, biracial who thinks they're better than the rest of us blacks

How does he keep finding himself in these situations lol

Another annoyance: Maté frequently states that the evidence that established treatments for diseases like cancer are helpful is "ambivalent at best" (his words) yet is presenting a book where the medical evidence for his thesis is also basically nonexistent

It's kind of insane of Maté to suggest that Gilda Radner, who had an extensive family history of cancer, really died of ovarian cancer because of childhood trauma. All while using evidence seemingly only taken from her wikipedia page rather than anything clinical or scientific.

I wish Maté would also make more conclusions about how greater societal norms effect stress. For example in the chapter about breast cancer he notes women with malignancy were often suppressing anger and other negative emotions. However, he doesn't mention that in a patriarchal society this is how women are expected to act. It would have been an interesting conclusion to show that misogyny is basically killing us

Idk if I agree with Maté's hypothesis that stress is causation of illness rather than just causing the onset of symptoms. I think a lot of these people were probably going to get MS even if they were in the happiest of situations, stress just made them more aware of the symptoms

Normally I support women's wrongs but this woman is a little too deranged lol

Only 30 pages in and I can already tell that every problem this couple has and is going to have could be solved by simply breaking up

Waiting in vain for someone to tell Elizabeth to get fucked...

Too much back and forth with the characters and timelines in the start of this imo
