Rereading after listening to the audiobooks for #1-3. Like where the characters have 'arrived' in book 4.

E seems to be getting into it now. Before this it’s been slow going. He liked Constance showing her muscle by lifting the table to scare the rats.

So good! But I can't stand the tension. I have to know the end and it will take forever to get there. So I skipped to the last three chapters and then dove into Checkmate. Will come back when I've been to the end and the suspense doesn't make it painful to read.

Tuum and meum— looked it up. The Latin words mean thine and mine.

“Life is full,’ said Francis Crawford, ‘of small disappointments." Even when confronted by his mortal enemy, whom he thought he killed, he's never at a loss!

Two uncertainties: jemmy bands and candidor candidis. Googled both but no luck. Have to investigate.
later--
candidior candisis is Latin for whiter whites. Jemmy bands will have to wait until my volume of The Dorothy Dunnett companion arrives.

"All the most beautiful men become monks," She said. "It's an oecumenical law or something. I can't imagine how they keep up the breed. What's wrong? Has Francis been rude? Then you must try to overlook it. I know you wouldn't think so, but he is thoroughly upset by Tom Erskine's death; and when Froncis is troubled he doesn't show it, he just goes and makes life wretched for somebody."

Another mystery--what did Trotty tell Phillippa? I'm guessing it must be something about Joleta, because Trotty attended her during her sickness. I'm guessing Joleta was pregnant.

Not an easy read, but very rewarding. There are times I don't understand exactly what's going on, but if I wait long enough, they generally explain the situation to the stupid character and then I catch on.

So much better reading with the guide to translate and explain the obscure references for me. Slows my reading pace down to crawl, but the suspense is both delicious and torturous. How is Lymond going to escape Threve???
