The narrator is amazing, and so impressive to have someone who can do so many different voices in THIS story. It’s a little frustrating to read this, currently, as the book feels like it’s both mourning the rise of fundamentalist Christian nationalists from the POV of a people looking back at how they destroyed America, and is showing how this ripples out to the future and continues violence. Yall gotta read it

OKAY OKAY I WAS WRONG THIS BOOK IS LOVELY

For a book about highwaymen and thieving, there’s very little heist planning or thievery happening.

If I read another historical fantasy that suggests that another way women are oppressed is with a lack of adequate pockets I am going to lose it. The late 1800 had arguably the best pockets in women’s fashion.

Why is this book the way it is. I’ve wanted to DNF since about 50% but I am DETERMINED to finish it.

This book is infuriating. Characters are just showing up wherever they need to be for plot reasons, the stupid griffins are especially guilty of just popping up and rescuing anyone. I really wish this series hadn’t gotten so much worse.

Where’s the mystery? I’m enjoying the book, but we only got the mystery part for the first few chapters, and now it’s all flashback. It’s interesting, but much more of a historical fiction/romance.

I’m enjoying this book. But. I still haven’t got to the mystery! There was a bit of it in the first few chapters, but it went back in time to the main character’s past, and just stayed there! Hopefully we’ll have mystery soon!

I’m only on chapter 6, but this is a hard book to read. The horrible things these girls went through because of ignorance, and neglect of working conditions is absolutely horrifying.

I have some frustrations with the way abuse and sexual assault are used in this book... if I was reading it only for myself, and not for class I would stop reading most likely.

This book is so rich. The world, the issues, the people all feel so real.

"The word 'detect' stemmed from the Latin 'detegere' or 'unroof', and the original figure of the detective was the lame devil Asmodeus, 'the prince of demons', who took the roofs off houses to spy on the lives inside."

So the book had started to drag for me, but every time I come across one of these histories in terminology, I remember how interesting the book is as a whole and keep reading.

This is SO GOOD. It's really hard not to read every second!!
