Starting today

Steamborn is competently written and I'm enjoying it for what it is, but the phrase that keeps coming to mind when I think about the book critically is 'Paint by Numbers.' It's functional, but the characters are generic and the only things to have gone wrong for the MC are the inciting incident and the mid-point twist. Everything else is handed to him, or someone comes along to rescue him.

I wasn't sure about the protagonist at first, but he's growing on me. Now, when I pick up this book to read a little bit more, my expectation is to settle in with this calm, enlightened soul as he moves through the stories and horrors happening around him.

First chapter down... and I feel like we fast-forwarded through months of time in the world. Tasha, the sister, talks like a broken record, which I imagine is the point, but still.
