Huw Evans is on page 205 of 437 of The Binding
I am having trouble with this book. I think I have worked out what is happening and going to happen and do not want to continue to find out if I am right or wrong. The concept of Binding is fascinating (no spoilers here) but I am wondering whether it could be differently used. A book on the bedside that you bypass each night to read something else is going to take some will power on my part to restart.

This is a book that should come with its own notebook. Each page comes with a revelation and an alternative view of what I thought I knew.

Hard going; mostly passive wrting, loathsome characters (mostly) written with constant supercilious narration.

I am finding this book overwhelming so can only read it until I am overloaded again. It is a massive undertaking and is written in a very direct and intense style. If every man is the sum of his experiences then Roberts has much to write about

I love Murakami and this is no exception. His ability to meld the surreal and the ordinary is exceptional. I am a little disappointed that he has not (possibly yet)introduced a talking cat but there is plenty of time yet.

So far so good; I can feel superior to the mutt in question. How much longer this will last I wot not.

Storming along at the usual breakneck plot which barely gives you time to question its possibility. Hawkwood is more substantial than Sharpe and the plots have more dimensions.

I had forgotten how dense the writing is in the Natty Bumpo m novels, which makes it slow going. What slows it down further is his use of vernacular. So far, not much to report

This is a Spatterjay novel written with the verve and exuberance I have come to expect from Neal Asher. There is the added bonus of androids with attitude. Lovely Stuff

This is captivating stuff, with fascinating characters, quite unlike anything I have associated with SK before. It is quite extraordinary in its imagination and never safe to read.

I had to stop reading this for a while; Theroux's constant carping and criticism of the things that he encounters becomes a little wearing after a while, without the saving grace of any irony in his statements. He has made it in one piece to Sri Lanka; if his views were published as he travelled he would probably be lynched.

I had to stop reading this for a while. It is such a remorseless read, full of violence, deprivation, torture and brutality. Knowing that it is a true story of a crass national error makes it harder to read, but it is worth every page.

Library books made me put this down for a while, but the writing in this book is startling and compelling. The author's background in this erudite and literate work remains shrouded in the past; I hope there is more elucidation of this fascinating man. Is it really a work of fiction?

Theroux doesn't get any less grumpy as he gets older. Quite why he travels I wot not, he always seems so find fault with everything he sees. Perhaps he travels so that he can see things at home in a better light. He is always amusing, if slightly snide, in his writings.

The style is meditative and observational, the journey also. There is a sparseness in the vignettes he describes that allows room for meditation. This is a superb piece of writing.
