I had to stop reading this for a while; Theroux's constant carping and criticism of the things that he encounters becomes a little wearing after a while, without the saving grace of any irony in his statements. He has made it in one piece to Sri Lanka; if his views were published as he travelled he would probably be lynched.

I keep falling asleep when I try to read this book. The crusty curmudgeon has reached Myanmar and has found even more to dislike about the world than usual!

Theroux doesn't get any less grumpy as he gets older. Quite why he travels I wot not, he always seems so find fault with everything he sees. Perhaps he travels so that he can see things at home in a better light. He is always amusing, if slightly snide, in his writings.

Lee Broderick I've never read any Theroux. Is he as egregious as his son?

message 2: by Huw (new) - rated it 2 stars

Huw Evans Pretty much; his fiction I find impossible to connect with, his travelling is brave, if nothing else!

Lee Broderick Thanks, think it's someone I'll give a miss and cross of the mental TBR list then!
