if I don't chomp down on this book like a pitbull and tear through to the end, I'll set it down and never pick it back up again. A fascinating roller coaster, but to read 500 pages of Twain concocting schemes to squander his wife's fortune makes me want to tear my hair out!

New words I've learned in the first 20 pages of this novel:

tergum - dorsal plate of a segment of an arthropod

exudate - oozing matter

phloem - complex tissue in the vascular system of plants

frass - debris or excrement produced by insects

I wish I'd read this before seeing the movie: knowing how all the puzzle pieces fit together deflates any tension.

Finally figured out how to correctly shelve my DNF stacks, so now my Reading Challenge numbers won’t be inflated by books I didn’t actually finish. I’ll sleep better at night knowing this wrong has been righted, and I can only imagine other Challengers will too!

Am I going to mark progress on this book while also marking as read each individual novel separately, just to bump up my reading challenge? You betcha. Will I feel a nagging sense of guilt for it for the rest of my life? Oh, absolutely.
