You know, the summary said there was a dark twist, but I didn’t quite imagine this dark twist. Even when it became obvious, I stayed in denial. Even when they out and out admitted it, I’ve just been shaking my head going, “really?” I’m going to finish the book because I need to know if they keep getting away with it but it’s a little more “horror” genre than I realized I was getting myself into.

Sigh. Not the book I was expecting from one of my fave hard science fiction authors. I probably should have read the book summary before jumping in. It’s well written, but not really my thing. I’ll finish this one but I probably won’t pick up the sequel … unless I forget, see a new book by Neal Stephenson, and jump into it again.

The story telling is great, as expected. But the protagonist is a 17-year-old boy telling his story from first person and it does not read at all like a teenager. The vocabulary is off. Hoity -toity just isn’t a phrase modern teens are using. And there’s other places too. It’s jarring at times.

Very slow start. I probably would have set it aside in the first chapter if it weren’t for book club. But it has definitely grown on me, partly because of how much it reminds me of my time in West Virginia.

Jane Eyre in space! It’s awesome so far.

I needed something that I'll love after finishing that last book ...

This book depresses me, and I keep putting it down hoping it's just a conspiracy theory. But I keep picking it back up because it helps explain what's happening in the world.

This is the stuff of nightmares for me as a left leaning Jewish feminist. I’d like to dismiss it as yet another conspiracy theory but it seems well researched from the sheer number of footnotes and sources cited.

So much mama drama, but also sooooo good.

Reminds me a little of the Night Circus so far.

So if I make my kid read this book, will it make her appreciate her parents more? I keep expecting one of the kids to get killed because of their awful parents ... which I guess might still happen in the second half of the book.
