This has descended into utter corruption, greed, manipulation, abuse - and downright horror. And seeing things through the eyes of an irredeemable, perverted villain makes this a rather creepy experience.

All of a sudden, pure body horror. And one of the main characters goes down a very, VERY dark path. And we have a creature. Like, with a capital ‘C’.
What IS this book?!

“Mountains yawn over the horizon here and there. A small pale moon, followed hours later by its brother. Indistinguishable, never sharing the same sky. Longing, intolerable need to be back by the ocean. The sun. Rain pelting itself suicidally against the train's windows as the brakes begin to tease it into a halt. Morning, but she had not slept.”

Two bodies have dropped, and after switching back and forth between print and audio and re-reading some parts, I’m finally beginning to understand some of what is going on. I was considering DNF’ing this, but I am too intrigued by the strangeness of it all.

Also, the audiobook narrator, Nathaniel Priestley, is aces.

It is all very, very strange.

So far, it’s more of an enumeration of horror films belonging to certain sub-genres and how they coincided with the zeitgeist than a psychological analysis. I hope this’ll go a little deeper and more into detail further on.

In the middle of a tense showdown. Pretty linear, nothing too unexpected, but it’s compelling enough to make me unwilling to put the book down.

It is suspenseful, but I am lacking a true emotional connection with Layla. I think there’s just not enough emotional introspection, and she’s too hard-hearted to really like her. But the plot propels me forward.

It’s unfortunate that I’ve grown fond of two characters who will very likely die.

It’s quite the survival thriller. I only wish I cared more about the FMC. She’s so callous, it’s making it hard for me.

Sill don’t know what exactly the Feeders are and how they came about, and I would like to know.

I’m a sucker for stories that include a competition.

It’s giving The Last of Us meets Hunger Games, but with… vampires(?).

It’s sleek and cyberpunk-y, and I’m imagining some very cool, rapid-fire rap music pulsing in the background.

“Christianity has made sycophants of most of us— lobotomized zombies who will suckle at any available teat even if it's leaking lighter fluid and we're holding a torch.”

This is disturbing and repulsive and dark, but also profoundly sad and lyrical in places. I am both repelled and intrigued.

So this is an alternative-history sci-fi about the US in the 1970’s engaged in a space war with aliens from Mercury. Interesting retro/future tech blend so far.

*shrieks*

*drops book and runs around in circles*

A rare moment of relief and joy and hope. I’ll pause here until tomorrow when I’m pretty sure Kay Kristoff will go back to stomping on the shreds of my heart.

WHAT VEIL INDEED?!

(The answer to that bloody question will be a jaw-dropper, I suppose. Two hundreds pages from hence.)
