Eustace is a spoiled, cocky brat. I assume that, somehow, quiet, artistic and sensitive Freddie will fall for him. That’s going to be an interesting enemies-to-lovers journey.

Finally, after a dry spell, a protagonist I immediately fall for: a young man in WW1 England, with a heart condition, who seems to love birds more than humans. There’s something fragile and tender about him that touches my heart.

Juliet is driving me crazy.

I swear to God, I’m gonna slap Juliet if she keeps making these stupid decisions!

This has become very immersive, and I feel a similar pull the audience of The Show must feel to uncover its secrets. If only Juliet was more relatable. She’s incredibly naive with her decisions, and she’s a bit grating.

There’s a sense of entitlement to Juliet that I don’t like, and she’s very self-centered. I don’t really care about her, and yet I am intrigued by the mystery of The Show. Something dangerous seems to be lurking behind the illusion, and I want to know what it is.

It’s like trying to wrap your head around something that WANTS you to be confused and mesmerized at the same time. Something foul is afoot here.

Like the main character, I have no idea what the frick is going on, but it’s all very pretty here. *looks around in wonder*

“His Castle” by Alma Katsu has an early twist, and I really liked the increasingly disturbing POV it’s written from. The ending feels rushed and a little trunkated, but so have the two previous stories. A common flaw with short stories.

“The Ones He Takes” by Benjamin Percy is a very obvious evil Santa story, short and with enough creepy atmosphere, but without any kind of twist. Okay, I guess.

Wenn man sich einmal eingehört hat, ist es recht spannend. Die Hauptfigur bekommt langsam mehr Tiefe als eine Scheibe Brot und wird sympathischer, auch wenn die Nebenfiguren flach wie Pappkarton bleiben.

The first one, The Importance of a Tidy Home by Christopher golden, is a creepy, gory piece of folklore from Salzburg, Austria. I liked it.

Reminds me a little bit of The Night Circus in terms of setting, combined with an evil-stepmother fairytale.

The witch trial is the usual abuse of male and clerical power, and, as usual, it makes me sick and furious.

Reads not like a horror novel, but like a thriller with mild supernatural elements, based on a historical witchcraft trial. While the writing style is not exceptional, the short chapters and crisp pacing make it an easy read so far.

Reads like a historical/ contemporary crime mystery so far, with “witches”.

Wow. This is getting ever more depressing, but I can’t put the book down, hoping for hope to re-emerge although it’s probably fruitless.
How can something so hopeless be so riveting?!

Turns out the character I like best is the lab rat.

This quickly turned into a discussion of anti-natalism. Food for thought, especially in radical times.

Didn’t want to break my stride with this series, so I’ve started book #3. We’re in America, and it’s off to a good start, but I already miss Ms Potter and Bors.

A wonderful side character is in peril, and I have to go to work. Ack!

The cheeky humor and the found family cast are reminding me of Becky Chambers. Could it be that I’ve discovered a ‘cozy horror’ series?

A little more casual in tone and with the humor pleasantly increased, I am having a great time so far. And I, too, could use some laudanum for my tinnitus.
Also, they’re calling PTSD “soldier’s heart” in this one.

Reading this because it was highly recommended to me. And I find the mother-son topic highly relatable. Not sure if that’s a good thing…

The heat is on, and I’m wondering if this intentionally about consent and/or force.

I’ve watched too many nature documentaries and zombie movies not to know what’s going on, but although it’s glaringly obvious it makes my skin crawl and has me glued to the pages.
