I would enjoy these books more if Mrs. Quent were less dumb, but I suppose that would short-circuit the plot.

Hmmm, my father wrote in his journal that he'd hidden two magical things to keep evil magicians from finding them. Years later, as I'm remodeling his house, I discover two mysterious and hidden things.

No connection there, obviously. I think I'll put them on display and invite a whole bunch of people over.

Hardy mans the blockade against Napoleon's France, from whence he stops British smugglers from importing (checks notes) tea and tobacco.

Wait, what? Are they blockading the US and India?

I figured out who Tavi is while reading book 1, but I'm SO MAD at myself that the significance of his name has only just dawned on me. It's so obvious! Sigh. I wasn't paying enough attention to other people's names.

"He had been a considerate and gentle bedmate ever since, but, unless (the dragons) were involved, he might as well call it rape.

Yet he knew someday, somehow, he would coax her into responding wholeheartedly to his lovemaking."

Bro. Even in 1968, this WAS rape.

It's ridiculous to hear an unmarried woman in Victorian England taking about having an affair without even once worrying about getting pregnant. People. Sex makes babies. Historical ladies worried a lot about that.

Miss Milton tells Stanton she doesn't know his first name; he says that it's Oliver.

Which is weird, because on page 23, he's called Barnaby.

HAS NO ONE EVER READ THIS BOOK BEFORE

This is the worst editing job I have ever seen in my life. Blair died 10 months ago; no, 5; no, 6. The woman Jane lives with is Lady Carruthers; no, Denby; no, Carruthers; no, Denby! (It's definitely Carruthers.)

Ugh. It's so, so distracting.

"A Banbury story" is a reference to Oscar Wilde's hilarious play The Importance of Being Earnest, which was written in 1892. So no character in a Regency should say that. (she pedantically noted)
