I've just realized I should have been approaching this like a bad melodrama: Ahab gets hit in the face with some foam, then says "I grow blind; hands! stretch out before me that I may yet grope my way. Is't night?" No, Ahab, that splash did not make the sun go down.

That was an odd ending.

I'm about 3 pages in and already mentioned are Piccadilly Circus, a butler, and a vicar's wife. I don't think this could get more British if it tried.

I got this in a bundle a while ago, but haven't read it because name sounded like it couldn't possibly be good. Sure enough, not very well written so far... Might still manage campy fun, though.

End of book 5. This feels like the end of a story arc. I gather books 6-10 feature Merlin instead of Corwin.

Finished with books 1 and 2. Pretty good so far.

I still dislike the use of de Sade as an icon of freedom. That *may* have been what he was trying to do with his writings, but the real-life rape and abuse are just as bad as anyone the Invisibles are fighting. I suppose it's hard to know if those things actually happened, but really, the author could have found someone else.

He just married, had 3 children, and was widowed in a single sentence, and now he's going traveling again.

Struggling with this one. I don't really care what happens to this guy.

The viewpoint character has switched a couple of times and it's much better now, if dry. Still lots of infighting, but no one is actively trying to start a riot.

So far the viewpoint character has implied to the Arabic contingent that political leader guy hates Arabs, gone through the Arabic part of the city and scratched "Jew" on random windows, and accused political leader guy of not working with him. You know, I wouldn't work with him either.

Ugh, Volkov isn't going to be a viewpoint character in this one, is he? I just started and already I'm annoyed.

Not the best writing, but it's doing a good job making me feel uncomfortable and creeped out

The characters in this book have odd things to say about Asian cultures.

Wondering if this rant about linguistic register and respect for language would make more sense in French. Wondering, in fact, if this whole book would make more sense in french.

Maybe it's just the personality of the viewpoint characters themselves and they'll how out of it, but so far this seems a bit pretentious and self important, a vehicle for the author to show off her own erudition.
