I was totally dragged into a NEED to read more when I read (pg 14) about the terrible wreck just outside of Staplehurst Dickens, his mistress, and her mother are in -- Dickens just rushes into the wreckage headlong and attempts to give aid to the injured and dying. During this rush, the sinister Drood enters the tale...he is a gaunt, deathly apparition in a coat and top hat.
So, back to the adventure!

Only 4 chaps completed and the banter, wordplay, and the little humor encountered so far remind me of Shakespeare comic farces. I haven't read enough to begin to identify which -- maybe a touch of all of them. So far, one of the 3 unities he employed in some of his play is not used in James’ book -- the unity in time. Enjoyable so far; will be looking for the other 2 unities: the unities of action and place.

Actually began reading & set it aside...I don't know why because so far I find the characters realistic and the pacing excellent. I also find a good deal in the plot thus far to make it believable. MUST get back to this story.

"Here's an interesting tidbit for you, Assistant Warden Hicks. Although the earth has made a little less than a single turn since what you call Aurora began, well over half of the women of in the world have gone to sleep. Almost 70 percent already. ...as your Dr. Norcross undoubtedly knows, dreading the inevitable is worse than the inevitable itself.Easier to let go."

now I'm ready to begin Part II

"He did not know who his parents were, and he did not expect the future to be a repetition of the past because that was unthinkable--he at least had a vision of the future which included a wildness in itself, a succession of graduated pleasures and loves and joys, and if it was going to be a struggle, that was all right, too; he knew how to fight for what he wanted. In fact, that was all he did know."

Mimi Wolske is on page 80 of 369 of The Martian
I'm no stranger to Mars. I've been here a long time. But I've never been out of sight of the Hab before today. You wouldn't think that would make a difference, but it does.
As I made my way toward the RTG's burial sight, it hit me. Mars is a barren wasteland and I am completely alone here. I already knew that, of course, But there's a difference between knowing and and really experiencing it.
