OK spoiler alert, I was wrong in that moment about River, being dead, and she got to play a more prominent role throughout. However, we still killed the queer, but they weren’t the only one killed. Still, the author didn’t need to make the one queer person one of two main characters killed.

River Thea is a trans woman! Yay represent! #%*$ that *SPOILER* the author killed the only explicitly (if there were even others. I didn’t notice any) queer character.

Good story, they just got together too early and I lost interest.

Honestly and ironically, I felt this story erased asexuality a bit. When they brought up demisexuality, it was very respectful, but in practice it was used as a plot point to overcome in order for them to be together. It was presented as the only option in a way that read “oh you haven’t formed the right bond yet.” Which reads like so many of the invalidating phrases leveled at people on the asexual spectrum.
