It's very striking how the four tenants for Jewish apocalypticism -- the world is fight between the forces of good and evil, things will not improve in this current "evil age", God will pass judgement and bring about a good age, and this will happen very soon -- are still at the center of the worldview of fundamentalist/extreme Christians, like the ones who believe in the rapture.

the affair finally started and the misogyny is way up 💀 why is this book known for its sex scenes the stuff about changes in class, technology, and coal mining in the interwar period is much better/more interesting (answer: the trial)

also, lol at Annie Bot being the first book I've read this year... in APRIL... some time earlier I was checking out lots of books on Libby and never getting far into them -- I almost reread Earth Girl, and I started The Charm Offensive (might pick that back up), and a graphic novel about life in Ivory Coast in like the 90s (Aya in Yop City)... and more that I didn't even open haha.

just scrolled through every book with an average rating above 4.0 I've shelved cuz I was curious, but I was more surprised at my own ratings than what books showed up -- books that I remember very fondly with 3/4 stars, and books with 5 stars that surely couldn't have been *that* good. And some like, picture books I was tempted to remove but I do like this account having as many books I've read as possible

I think my second status made this book sound too normal-good. It's ridiculous. there was a chapter where a character was so consistently compared to a dog I started wondering if it was becoming bad writing 💀

like, the first paragraph? "Our is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins ... We've got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen." This is so much more than a smut book. "Moments followed one another without necessarily belonging to one another." So much stuff not just on sex and gender but class, Englishness, industrialization

started to see what the writing style is like (was going to reference it in a story but would the character actually read it?), but actually so fascinating. i've been highlighting every page, and I NEVER highlight books. no i haven't been reading it for weeks at a time but i do want to pick it up again.

Goodreads just sent me an email to make sure I have all my books for this year to get my Year In Books and at this point I think I've totally forgotten what I read like, March to June and never marked...

It makes me sad to have nothing 'currently reading' but it's the unfortunate truth... I opened "The Opposite of Loneliness" the other day but idk if I'll actually read it :P

does anybody else like to reread favorites around the same time of year? I don't do it very often, but I did it in middle school with Fangirl and I like to watch a specific Christmas vlog on Youtube in August every year.

If I finish Venom & Vow and read the first two books of Death Note I checked out again (I like rereading things at the same time of year...) I will exactly meet my goal... wish me luck I guess. I also have things 5x more important to do but that hasn't stopped me so far this week...
