I think my second status made this book sound too normal-good. It's ridiculous. there was a chapter where a character was so consistently compared to a dog I started wondering if it was becoming bad writing 💀

like, the first paragraph? "Our is essentially a tragic age, so we refuse to take it tragically. The cataclysm has happened, we are among the ruins ... We've got to live, no matter how many skies have fallen." This is so much more than a smut book. "Moments followed one another without necessarily belonging to one another." So much stuff not just on sex and gender but class, Englishness, industrialization

started to see what the writing style is like (was going to reference it in a story but would the character actually read it?), but actually so fascinating. i've been highlighting every page, and I NEVER highlight books. no i haven't been reading it for weeks at a time but i do want to pick it up again.
