The pacing and found family theme is so engaging!

I’m getting into DNF territory because many slice-of-life moments don’t seem to serve the plot and create drag.

It typically bothers me when contemporary authors don’t trust their readers to understand subtext. It hasn’t been too bad in this book, but at 57%: Sera wonders if Luke has been drinking or on magic mushrooms. Then she asks “have you been drinking? Are you on magic mushrooms?” This could have used another editing pass.

I’m preferring the last half of the book more than the first half. The first half is Pride a s Prejudice from Mary’s POV and it was a bit “woe is me” and honestly she was such a boring character at that point the book was hard to read.

While Mary is perceptive, I question whether she is a reliable narrator since she has such low self-esteem.

Something about book 2 is missing the charm of book 1 in this series. I feel kind of bored.

The first chapter got off to a nice pace but chapters 4-5 have dragged so far. Lots of repetitive introspection from the FMC and while the greenhouses are interesting the descriptions are really dragging.
