Okay, it did eventually get very sapphic! The relationship between characters isn’t the focus of the story, but it works as a lens to frame Lenore’s change of view from external to internal through the changes she views in those around her.

So far I wouldn’t actually describe this retelling of Carmilla as sapphic. That could change, but as of right now Carmilla is a “mirror” of Lenore’s inner desire and rage.

The few moments we do have of Lenore’s attraction to Carmilla seem less sapphic than her idolizing Carmilla’s sexuality in comparison to her own repressed sexuality.

At this point it feels like nothing new has happened in the book

Interesting depiction of generational trauma and how it influences our lives in innocuous but insidious ways.

I was immediately drawn in by the opening chapters of this book. Steph’s past and present collide in a way that feels tangible. Generational trauma pulling her backward while also propelling her toward her ambitions. She and Della are very different, yet share a deep sense of family loyalty and an unspoken magnetic pull between them.
