I love the writing. The story is compelling, it's DH Lawrence! The passages in the beginning when Gertrude ruminates on nature are fulfilling in this time of Covid and lockdown. Having just finished The Sympathizer, this is another book where the writing fulfills me. I hate poorly written books. Give me the brilliant ones or none at all!

Read this book in a week, ignoring people around me, not able to go to sleep early. Powerful, strong writing. Very important read for a Vietnam protestor like myself.

This is not a book you can just read through from cover to cover it's more like a spiritual high from one paragraph to another

Pretty good

Not as good by a long shot as Empire Falls.
