pretty fun and easy read, though the narration does get quite tedious and repetitive as it goes on. some sections did move me! but i really don’t need to hear how clever francis bacon is every five seconds; i wish he’d just show me instead

something something an attempt at shifting traditional power dynamics something something the romance genre as a space to explore kinks with the novel serving as a framework of a kink scene but The Sex Scene still doesn’t sit too well with me. maybe because julia isn’t a good writer, maybe because i simply can’t relate to wanting a baby THIS badly

pleasantly surprised by a shockingly woke take from young daphne who doesn’t know shit about fuck but strongly feels that young women shouldn’t be kept in the dark about sex

beautifully done - i cried so much, punched the air a few times, and overall just really really fell in love with mary. i really liked the way the romance was handled, especially the way it didn't suddenly overtake the narrative at the expense of everything else, but still felt satisfying in the same way austen's own books do. one i will be revisiting for years to come i'm sure!

picked this up this afternoon and haven’t stopped reading it since - i didn’t expect to be crying so frequently for mary, but it’s hard not to when so many of your own past experiences, emotions and thought processes stare right back at you from the page
