This book is a slog, but smith is so fucking clever. She says things in unmistakably clear but completely one of a kind ways—‘he would have sworn even the man’s tears of amusement were 40 proof’. It’s so cool, and even tho absurdism isn’t my jam, I still enjoy reading it for these nuggets

If Nikki Payne weren’t such a good writer, I wouldn’t still be reading this book. I forgot I avoid sense and sensibility because the second hand embarrassment makes me want to crawl out of my skin, and Payne captures that tone perfectly. The characters and everything are worth suffering through the basic story tho
