My first book by this author and I am unconvinced and waiting for him to come to the point. His biases are however quite obvious already…. I will finish it because it’s relevant to my work but probably won’t pick up a book by this author again…

Am I the only one who doesn’t hate Staten and Maliah together? The issue with Liberty is that very validly, he can’t help but see her as an addict and she’s too grown to be fighting with Chanel and that’s why she’s over the whole thing (well that and relapsing). Maliah will probably go lower if Chanel tries it.

Hassan just did whatttt??!!!!! Never have I been so let down by a character in a book. Whyyyyy???!!! For what?!!!

There’s not a single man in this book that respects women. I’m captivated like a really good reality tv show, but basically there is not one single swoonworthy hero in the book. The worst by far is the eldest son- who’s really too ignorant and too much of a wasteman to be so loud and rude. But even the so-called hero, Prime, has no liver to break up with his long-term partner. I’m honestly rooting for no one.

Dude has said he’s not ready- why are you forcing him? It’s wild.

The way Yendi is begging for this man… i don’t know why she’s fighting to hard for someone who seems less invested - at first it made sense, but now it’s giving desperate… and based on their relationship development, it makes no sense.

I have to take a break from this so I don’t smack the senseless decision-making out of the heroine. Immediately I saw the decision she was making, I no longer had the patience. I will come back to this soon but honestly, she makes it hard going.

Just through with the prologue and I can already see there might be major issues with the proofreading and editing… but I am interested in where the author wants to take the story. I’m getting old Nigerian movies (of the variety I like) vibes.

It’s not that I’m not enjoying it… it’s just that all the female characters are incredibly beautiful, drop-dead gorgeous, super sport Mensa genius inventors, rich, with patents and successful businesses and also talented mountaineers and hikers, and poker sharps and more amazing than they know. It’s all a bit too much with the superlatives. Their only flaws are working too hard, being too thoughtful.. 🙄

The casual way Vida is reacting to this really disturbing news is taking me out! She is petty and immature for real. Wow.

I’ve been reading this for months and I’m a little disappointed… because I’m so passionate about this series but this one isn’t delivering for me like the others have.

I’m really enjoying this. The blend of the historical and the fiction really brings that era to life. And this author is excellent at writing really imperfect people that make eminently human decisions that you feel eminently connected to.

Every time I read this author, I’m like she really sabi di work! She has a knack for turning the mundane into the most compelling thing you’ve ever read. And her character development…. 🔝🔝🔝🔝

I’m AMAZED that this book is still going. Moreover, that we’re introduced to new characters at this point who’ve taken over the story. Whose book is this at this point? Who are these people?

It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s fine, and I think the bits when they interact that explore female friendship are interesting, the hoopoe’s stories are fine, but it’s kind of meh to me… it’s just dragging and I’m not yet seeing the point. Two-thirds of the way in, these 3 women go on a sort of pilgrimage and then… just circle around their issues ad nauseum. I keep waiting for something to happen.

A newborn could have told this heroine it would end badly…. Perhaps not this epically badly but still quite badly.

Tell me why nearly a quarter of the way in, this heroine is trying to do THE MOST to rescue a relationship where she has been cheated on multiple times in an obvious way, betrayed etc AND she has resources and support AND advice AND knows better… this plot arc of the heroine’s bad previous relationship is dragging too long and it’s not a good look for the rest of the book.

Very cute but sooooo much angst. And you can’t help but feel much of the angst could be addressed within a single conversation especially since both MCs are such talkers…
