Honestly this would have been a great read if the 3rd act was moved up to the beginning and we spend time with her navigating her life and maybe make it a love story about loving yourself with a sprinkle of romance. The dynamics of who she wants to be vs. her family dynamics were intriguing and didn't get enough time to shine. It just seems like it wanted to be that and it was forced into the romance genre 😔

So she starts a token for hire pr agency. OK. She doesn't mind working for bigots as long as the pay is good. OK. The other black characters are actual tokens as well, and she herself is a token in her own story....... I'm really struggling to continue.....i still have hope.

New title "the virtue of virtue signaling under the burden of white guilt." She doesn't specify what her past racist actions were nor what steps she took to become less racist, but this book is sooo pandering to white people who want to be "involved" have a sprinkle of black friends but can barely muster the bare minimum. They say stuff "I hear you" or "I understand where you're coming from" but like do you?

Are we really gonna talk about racism without including the people it affects the most? Fr?

I'm 3% in, the author has already managed center their white guilt within the framework of "understanding" racism. She mentions her black friend but kind of co-ops her experience as a teachable moment towards non allies,while expecting her flowers because she named dropped James Baldwin and Dubois. The title should have been "the burden of living and overcoming white guilt," It's not looking good, y'all

While the art is stunning, I feel like the text portion is disjointed in its overall purpose. I feel like the author is trying to lecture every version of a black person in a white person's mind and often times from the black perspective as well. But I don't get the biblical allegorical messages, the iconography, which seems to contradict the subtle and often times not so subtle themes, questions, expectations, etc

I was passively reading and I noticed some glitches in the narration. I had an inkling , after some investigating i think I low key kind of confirmed that the narrator is AI. I feel betrayed by my library because it isn't even labeled AI and now I'm not sure if the book wasn't written using AI as well.

Cenric/Brynn always happens to be at the right place at the right time. They are not proactive. They are always reacting despite the obviousness of the situation. The plot is bare there. It feels like a series of events jumbled together in order to justify why Cenric/Brynn needs to be together after each ordeal. Brynn is so subservient and obsessive with Cenric that the different points of view become pointless.

I'm only 9% and the main character, her inner circle... etc are not the worst but not my kind of people. This semi autobiography lacks direction and teeth. When we meet the character, it seems more like she is trapped between mild irritation and apathy. I'm not sure if it's the narrator, but the words feel so hollow, and every time she lets us in, I'm like, is this about marriage or misandry or misanthropy.

Ok, now can everyone except Evelyn & Emily come to the front of the class 🙏.
