This book is. Hard to read.

Fellas I'm not having a good time with this one

This might be one of the most American books I've ever read. The spooky brain-infecting fungi are cool, but the blind idolisation of American intelligence agencies and demonisation of enviromentalism and anti-imperialism is making me a bit nauseous

Time to get into this series, nearly three decades after everyone else.

Not off to a good start. I got some hope when the narrator started talking about how archeologist are to always hand over retrieved artifacts to their country of origin, only for the main character to immediately decide she doesn’t give a shit about ethics and commit some casual grave robbery because she’s totally meant to have this object found in a burial site in a foreign land.

I knew this one was basically playing around with magical knock-off ikea, but I wasn’t prepared for the casual swedish thrown in on occassion. Always throws me for a loop when reading an otherwise english-language story

Unexpectedly, I'm loving this

Apparently, some pets, but not all, are psychic. I do not know why I find this so inordinantely funny.

God I hate him so much

I remember when I first read Twilight at maybe 14 or 15, I thought that "yeah this is pretty bad, but at least it's diverse in having so many native characters instead of being all white, that's a plus." Now, rereading it over ten years later and seeing the blatant appropriation and twisting of quileute mythology for what it is, it's kinda... yikes. You live and learn, I guess.

Listen if I'm going to have to reread Twilight for a uni class I'm AT LEAST going to go with the version with a cool vampire lady instead of Edward.

This is coming off a lot as pro american military propaganda with vampires and I am straight up Not Having a Good Time.

The idea of purposefully hiring a "truly terrible" navigator so as to get someplace you can only find by getting lost is fucking hilarious. "Don't worry, we'll get there; our navigator is simply the worst."

Can't believe I'm saying this but I'm actually invested in this romance plot

I did not start this book about sci-fi neanderthals expecting to encounter a graphic rape scene just a few chapters in, but here we are. Ugh

The police: finds a mutilated body 15 feet up in a tree

The police, immediately: "Maybe he was involved in drugs."

I just read the words "breasts jutting arrogantly" with my own two eyes and feel like I'm in shock

I'm trying to figure out what the deal is with half the characters being named Smith (including the main character). Is it a weird joke? A not too subtle hint that they're all lying about their names? Will we ever know?

Already getting the feeling that "Dammit Dahak" is going to be the catchphrase of this series

Ah yes, historical quotes such as "not in front of the blob" and "that hole is cgi"
