It's rather astonishing, though surprisingly effective, that Trollope has such major events as a duel and a broken engagement take place entirely offstage.

(My first guess about the duel was right by the way.)

I know that Phineas fights a duel at some point, and I'm low-key having fun trying to guess whether it will be with Lord Chiltern or Mr. Kennedy (or Lawrence Fitzgibbon for a long-shot). Don't anybody tell me.

Re-reading after many years, having recently watched the 2005 miniseries, and appreciating it even more than I remember on the first go-round.

You know it's the fun kind of history book when one of the characters that keeps turning up is a would-be inventor who's better at hustling and swindling named Augustus Herring.
