Deirdre is 90% done with Dracula
Have caught up with the Dracula Daily emails (my original plan for reading but I didn’t keep up) so have switched to reading them and will be finished in two days. I now wish I had just read print as the audio voices are so over the top and I would rather form my own opinion of what kind of characters they all are. The audio version I got from the library does not do justice to Van Helsing or Dr. Seward

This book is tedious. Glad I am reading it but I am so looking forward to finishing!

Fabulous and inspiring book. Reading a chapter or two per week.

Putting this aside at least until I can get it from the library again. I am having mixed feelings about it and whether I will continue. It contains fascinating stories that need telling and inspiration for today’s ctivists, but it’s all over the place and repetitive. The recurring lists of committee members feel like biblical begats (why not add these to notes?) The audiobook is filled with mispronunciations…

Trying to shift over to Storygraph. Will update both sites for the time being. But if you are over there, I’m @superdewa

Since I am reading just one story whenever I have a chance to sit in a cafe by myself or with another reader for as long as it takes to read a chapter, this is taking me a while. I am not loving it as much as The Interpreter of Maladies or The Namesake, but it intriguing enough to keep plugging away. I just bought another book of short stories for the same intent so plan to work more cafe reading time into my life.

I read this book over and over in my teens and I enjoyed it just as much this time as I remembered. This time I listened to it. The audible full cast version was wonderful.

Still reading (listening). Just stopped short for this quote: “I don't care a damn about men who are loyal to the people who pay them, to organizations...I don't think even my country means all that much. There are many countries in our blood, aren't there, but only one person. Would the world be in the mess it is if we were loyal to love and not to countries?”

Switched from audio to print. Not only does print have photos, but audiobook narrator mispronounces names that most NYers would know (ie Etan Patz and Curtis Sliwa) and words like “zine,” showing that she is not a NYer, not NY cool, and didn’t consult with the author or have a decent editor. Still love the book!

Almost a third of the way through and I’m bailing on this book. I’m interested in the settings and the ethics and could possibly be interested in the medical stuff despite my squeamishness but there are just too many details about every character that I don’t care about, too much focus on people’s appearance, and too much of the plot comes down to passion and lack of communication. Not for me

Not going to rate this here because I was at the same high school at the same time and knew some of the same people think my feelings may be influenced by that

Still in the middle of this but enjoying it so much! It reads a little like Charles Dickens. The characters, their childhoods, and their stories are amazing. And while I feel like I had a good history education, my civil war era US history was a little sketchy, so I am learning a lot. Example: I knew nothing about the Sewards, who were such an interesting and (so far) admirable NY family.
