Absolutely delighted with this one - lighter in tone than 'North woods', but still awesome. The humour and charm remind me of 'Unlikely animals' by Annie Hartnett

Oh my but Claudia Piñeiro really went for it this time.. I don't think I hated any characters more than I do a few in this novel. I'm so mad 😅

I've been on a hunt for a good literary mystery novel and this is exactly what I wanted. And that it is translated makes me even happier. I'm loving the exploration of faith and memory in this story. Read 'Elena knows' before, but liking this one more

Ufff but I dislike John so much.. I know there's nuance and there are reasons but he's a horrible human being and I hope he gets punished.. Or I'll write myself a final chapter to humiliate and bring that man down

The cases Rachel Aviv describes are varied, emotional and intersectional, which I really appreciate but what I'm missing is some insight or discussion. This is just facts, with no interpretation from the author, no connecting it with any theory, with other phenomenons, anything. Feels gossipy more than insightful

Started this on audio and loving Anne Enright's narration. My only thing is I would have preferred this more narrowly focused, e.g only talking about the writers that impacted her, instead of doing a bit of everything. But I enjoy Anne Enright's insights so far, so on we go :)

Not loving it - it has some literary flares, but generally feels like unrefined family drama... Will pass on that one

This is lovely. Won't be very original if I say it feels so summery, but it really does.. Lyrical, flowing sentences, the whole book has such a calm, drawn-out rhythm, like a long, summer day. Gorgeous, feels like being transported to a small, remote island with lots of nature and water around.

This has an interesting structure: a family mosaic with stories from the main character's childhood and her mother's childhood, separated by a present day narrative. Almost like all the stories from the past condense and create the culminating 24 hrs we're witnessing. I find many things frustrating, small moments and interactions like where a husband laughs-off their kid being rude to the mother. But Wallace is worst

Hmm.. It's weird reading about the other relationships and the times when they just 'moved on' without each other. Not sure how I'm liking that

This is so well-written I'd highlight every other sentence (if I wasn't reading a library copy..). A lot of to pour over, demands to be read slowly

Adventure continues and we're focusing on Odysseus now. Athena keeps making him look more impressive and attractive to get respect (looks were everything even BC). I assume we'll start casting back now to hear how his return trip began, since we've jumped straight to the ending.

This is so fun! I didn't expect it, but it's like an adventure story mixed with intrigue and drama! Is this like a great-great-grandmother of a telenovela? 😅 Wilson's translation is a delight - not as poetic as some previous renditions, but such an accessible read.. it's flying by!
