Jacob’s POV is hitting a bit too close to home.

Out of Time was a good start for the summer section of the collection. It provides us with the writer's history with the pond as well as her relationship with swimming, which she describes as being rather 'fair-weather'. I enjoyed the literary comparisons and the reflection on an experience with a major storm on the way to the pond one day.

The idea of Venezuelan-born descendants of white American colonists crying about being treated like slaves by Spanish merchants while profiting off the enslavement of Africans. Capitalists truly are the same regardless of the century.

Also, Humboldt being an abolitionist is nice to know. I hope there’ll be more information on his thoughts on the impact of slavery on nature.

Really enjoying this so far.

The So Mayer essay is a beautiful reflection of the writer's relationship with the pond as a kid, and the difficulties of accepting their existence as a trans person. The visual parallel made between slave auctions and anti-trans women protesters wearing the pond's sign was well done and connected through a short historical lesson as well as connections between the writer and Jesuit priest Gerard Manley Hopkins.

It's not keeping my attention as much as the first book in the Dublin Murder Squad series. The dynamics in the small town is the most interesting thing in the book so far. Cal, as a MC, is just okay as of right now.

It has been quite harrowing to read this while Christofascists pass anti-LGBTQIA+ laws in support of conversion therapy as well as anti-queer discourse sparked by an athlete.

I have been on and off reading this book for like 3 years now and I know that when I finish it that it will be one of my favorite books ever. I don't know why I've yet to finish it despite being halfway through. I may restart it again from the beginning to finally complete it in one go.

Nina’s essay is a great start to the spring section. Her essay is a journey across the waters that she has swam in since her youth of relocating to 4 different places—always stuck in the middle and anchored to many places, strange and shifting. It ties life experiences such as her first period, an earthquake occurring ‘back home’, and the death of her grandmother to watery language.
