I mean, they’re kind of like the train wreck you can’t look away from. Every time you think, “SURELY they’ll stop now”—nope! The train has come off the tracks, wheels are off, the conductor hopped off years ago—and somehow, they’re still chugging along. That’s fascinating in its own right.

Fantastic reading, I fear I’ll have to disappear again soon thanks to annoying law school applications. Still can’t believe LSAC sends me a VOLUNTARY survey on “rating my experience!” as though it were some kind of spa retreat. Literally: “Did any particular song help get you HYPED for the LSAT?” (I.e., “Always” by Beyonce.) uhh no. Try, “The Drugs Don’t Work Anymore”, “Under Pressure”, etc.

Pretty wild that I picked this book back up like a day and a half after al-Assad was sentenced to death in absentia. But we all know that he is currently housed among Putin’s Collection of Dictators of Depreciated Value, brushing up on his ophthalmology.

Between my move to Savannah on NYE, the whole moving process, LSAT and not having all my books with me, it’s been too long since I finished a book or wrote a review. But that’s about to change 🩷

I’m a moderate, so I like to stay away from books containing endorsement blurbs from Rachel Maddow - or Ben Shapiro. The preface mentions FDR giving Stalin “the benefit of the doubt” (true) “an attitude not shared by ally…Winston Churchill” (false; they’d competed to befriend & understand him) “nor Roosevelt’s successor, Harry Truman” (true). It’s a bit concerning the author didn’t know that.

I get that to be in the position Bezos is in, you have to be insanely driven, rule your company w/absolute control; lines between fear and dedication become blurred for employees. Just ~20% in, and it’s already about destroying small businesses that pose no threat of competition, firing employees who fell into the bottom 10% of performers at the end of the quarter w/stacked ranking systems… what a nightmare.
