I said months ago I would never pick up another Karin Slaughter book but here I am. What is the definition of insanity again?

I am almost frustratingly lost while reading this lol. I know half the appeal is never really knowing what's going on but I can't tell if I'm supposed to be confused right now or not.

Me: I've finally gone through all my library books, time to start reading the stuff I've bought and have yet to read

the dialogue is by far the weakest part of the story imo. the writing is otherwise great, plot is nothing at all so far but that's fine, but the conversation is so cold and detached

This is on the precipice of being way too dumb for me to continue, but I'm JUST invested enough to keep going. But these characters have clouds for brains and there's way too much shock value violence.

i really hate it when books include too many references to current events and this one is chock-full of them, from covid, to the american election, to BLM. they serve no purpose to the story and could have just as easily been omitted and i wish they had been.

Thankfully these books in the series are all separate from each other.. I hate reading books out of order but I forgot to push back my hold on this one and the waitlist is really long so my lack of foresight made the decision for me.

The way I got kind of emotional at the part where he had to say goodbye to the pole that he used to maneuver upstream...........

I like that the author adds in historical bits that occurred in whatever area he is currently in, really appeals to my interest of historical adventuring. One of my favourites (less a story and more an observation) is when shaolts found old remains of a fire and fish bones untouched for an estimated 50ish years. So cool.

I understand maybe 5% of the descriptions and references which makes some of this feel like a slog. Perhaps it's be more enjoyable if you were a fan/knowledgeable of 60s British music.

I kinda hate it when authors make real life celebrities a character in their fictional books. it's too fanficy for me, thank you.
