Chapter 1 was pretty solid stuff. Nothing “new” for me, per se, but made some of the puzzle pieces in my thinking (and heart posture towards work and rest as part of God’s good creational design) click together more tightly.

Awesome first chapter on what spiritual formation is and what it isn’t (or, rather, what it shouldn’t be).

Read ch. 1 for a study thru Hebrews I’m doing with a buddy from church. Vos has a very weird (and novel) view of the audience of the epistle, which he also oddly spends the duration of the chapter on — namely, that Hebrews is not (as is commonly believed) written to Jewish Christians tempted to fall back to Judaism bc of persecution, but rather to Gentiles who are tempted with religious externalism. Def weird!

Read 2.8.13-27 (exposition of commandments 1-3).

Chapter 8 (“We Don’t Need Another Hero”). Very insightful and sober-minded.

Insanely fire. Horton is incredible in this book. So insightful and incisive. Makes me even happier to be Reformed — not as a badge of honor that makes me superior to those “other” Christians, but because of the way that the emphasis on the ordinary means of grace helps me to live the ordinary, faithful, sustainable Christian life that God calls me to. Every non-denom brother/sister should read this chapter.

Read Book II, Chapter 8, sections 1-12. Consisting of his general observations and remarks on the nature of the moral law (summarized in the 10 Commandments) before he will spend the majority of the remainder of the chapter expounding each of the commandments.

Read chapter 4 on the free offer and divine sincerity. Some good food for thought but I found Macleod’s exegesis of 2 Pet. 3:9 and especially 1 Tim. 2:4 lacking. Not sure if his quotations of Calvin on these passages accurately reflects the whole tenor of Calvin’s thought in his broader comments on those passages.

Read Book II, Chapter VII.

Chapter 2 is fantastic. So refreshing and full of the gospel, and how the peace and security that comes through Christ leads to a life of freedom to love God and others “without trying to score points.”
