Thousands of tanks had rolled back and forth over the gravelly rock of Libya during WWII, in the titanic desert struggle between Germans and the British. And it was there that Rommel's forces chronically short of fuel, had ultimately been overwhelmed. Neither side knew that, even as their fuel gauges were falling, they were fighting at times only a hundred miles or so from one of the worlds great reserves of oil.
