Where did Americans live in 1870? About 35% lived in New England and the Middle Atlantic states -- that is, between Maine and Washington DC. Another 35 % lived in east and west north central states, which included both West Virginia and Kentucky. Another 26% lived in the eleven states of the old Confederacy. This left 4% in the vastness of the Mountain and Pacific states.
