Ah, classic disordered eating/toxic diet framing - she views different food as "good" and "bad", like sugar and caffeine is bad. She mainly mentioned people with "compulsive overeating" rather than anorexia or orthorexia.

Um... she uses self-help books like a God Ouiji board?

If she says that suicide is a "permanent solution to a temporary problem" one more time....

It seems to me this wealthy cis het white woman had mostly good experiences with the psychiatric system because it was built for her. She doesn't report any psychiatric abuse and seems to like the paternalistic, controlling aspects of the system. She's blissfully unaware that the system does not treat everyone like that, just people like her.

She is very moralizing. And seems unable to comprehend that many people have very real material reasons for wanting to be dead, which is shown in the data, which she hasn't read. She also assumes everyone has a well-off family with great health insurance eager to support them with a large social circle. This is just a book for her.

She repeatedly says that "suicidal thoughts were my drug of choice." This woman doesn't understand suicidality or drug use.

She also seems obliviously unaware or doesn't care that these numbers all call the cops, which is very dangerous for many people

I find the tone condescending, and our narrator annoying. My current conclusion is that I experience suicidal thoughts VERY differently and for very different reasons than our author.

Wow, our MC is so very annoying and naive to the point of absurdity 🙄 This entire book reads like it was written by a self-righteous 16-year-old as revenge porn 😒

She frames coming out as a binary variable, either you're in or you're out as non monogamous. And not coming out is viewed as hiding who you really are.

How typical - a New Yorker runs away to California and then makes broad sweeping statements about " East coast" versus "west coast" paradigms, having never been outside of NYC 🙄 NYC is not the center of the universe

The lack of awareness and consideration of sexism, patriarchy, and misogyny in this codependency section is glaring.

I also found the descriptions of restorative justice to completely miss accountability and ownership of harm as one of the steps. Nothing is said about what a constructive and honest apology looks like, like the 3-part apology model. This felt like some cis het white man nonsense

She starts by saying that no one should label people's relationships as enmeshed or codependent; and then maybe 15 minutes later, is literally making that direct judgment of one of her past partners' relationships. I'm also having a hard time putting my finger on it, but this feels so very white and straight and cis focused, with no awareness of intersectionality or power dynamics.

Her anecdote about playing therapist and mediator to her mother and grandmother as a child isn't as cute as she thinks it is

Ugh. The use of object (it) and gendered pronouns for various internal parts heavily indicates this author needs to work on her gendered assumptions. "Princesses" or people who want to be the center of attention can be of any gender, not just women and girls. And our child and teenage selves are not "it" while other parts are humanized with "they" pronouns.

It's unbelieve that they were together for 2 years when college age and they NEVER spoke about high school, family, or why they're interested in their chosen career paths...

Wow, this kid is a total dick. The character writing is so bad; the kid is ALL over the place emotionally and reacting in wildly different ways. And what is with the audiobook reader making the villain have a southern accent? Is it because he's a bigot??

I'm really NOT feeling this book. The main trans character is a selfish asshole and the 'antagonist' is a grieving autistic kid that isn't believable/real either... dark book - not a rom-com
