Just when I thought it couldn’t get worse. Chapter 10 is a bunch of imagined letters.

Chapter 10 opens with “the space between the documented and undocumented leaves room for the imagined.” might as well be the author’s confession. So far, gaps in historical evidence have been filled in with speculation from the author.

In chapter 8, the author takes a woman calling her older lover “Daddy” and transforms it into a grand statement about imperial power. She turns a pet name into evidence of colonial dynamics, as if every relationship with an age gap were a geopolitical allegory. Not every intimate detail is a metaphor for empire!

“The existence of Isabel Cooper & other mestizo was evidence that sex, and a lot of it, defined the colonial encounter.” The author takes the existence of mixed-race children as proof of widespread sexual activity, then declares sex THE defining feature of American colonialism. That’s an extraordinary leap from a simple observation to a sweeping historical conclusion, with little evidence to bridge the gap.

Hating this book as I continue to progress. The author keeps arguing that Cooper's relationship with MacArthur was an expression of American imperialism, rather than simply a personal relationship. Every mention of the relationship becomes elaborate indictment of imperialism. Every romantic decision is evidence of colonial exploitation, whether the evidence supports it or not.

Worst line of the book so far “Archives can be tombs as much as they are sites for exhumation. “

Ironically, the sentence needs exhuming before making any sense. It's the kind of sentence written to sound profound rather than to communicate anything meaningful.

The author repeatedly emphasizes how Filipinas were sexualized, marginalized, and denied power under colonialism, yet simultaneously portrays their personal relationships as deliberate acts of resistance. She projects agency onto them without evidence, mistaking what she wishes these women could have done for what they actually did. Shes rewriting history to fit her preferred narrative.

The author presents an American (coopers father), marrying a Filipina (coopers mother) as a challenge to colonial power, then portrays her leaving him for another American soldier as colonial resistance. Defying social conventions isn’t necessarily challenging political structures. Author makes leaps turning personal choices into political acts, without establishing any political intent or consequence.

Title is misleading. Mistress? MacArthur was divorced and single. Empire’s Girlfriend wasn’t catchy enough? Empire? relationship ended before WWII even began. author seems determined to make Cooper more than the gf, despite her unsuccessful acting career & limited historical significance. Not everyone needs to be a feminist icon/ political force. Not every historical footnote needs a promotion to main character.

It’s called The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, yet nearly halfway through the book, I’ve met TWO husbands while a massive chunk of the story revolves around Evelyn’s relationship with Celia. At this point, the title feels like false advertising and I am close to not finishing this book.

Interesting topic. But the numerous spelling and grammatical errors makes it difficult to read.

Wanted to like this book but got SO BORING half way through!

1. Author kept using sternum for some reason
2. Misleading. Says it’s about love friendship and affairs then throws in a terminal illness. Some readers don’t like reading about terminal illness. That should be mentioned upfront l.
3. Plot was DRAGGING and wasn’t going anywhere.

Author sure likes the word “sternum” a lot.
