i am, in every conceivable way, rebecca’s dream target audience for this book, so if it turns out to not be good i have to conclude what i’ve suspected for a while now which is that she’s just not that good at writing

this is like if susan choi wrote the idiot but about a philosophy/math grad student (ie made for me in a lab). i’m so excited

there’s a certain kind of white-women-writing-about-girlhood prose that i thought was stylistically cool when i first encountered it (e.g. in Emily Temple’s The Lightness), but had never resonated with me. maybe bc i didn’t have crushes and probably didn’t feel sexual attraction until i was like 19, maybe bc i wasn’t a white girl, maybe…(ill continue these thoughts in review but still giving this a shot)

especially when that is their entire purpose in the plot

i’ve become so much more critical of prose/“sentence-level” than i used to be, and it’s bc i started writing. i now feel a pressure to read “good prose” so that i can absorb it and elevate my own writing. can’t decide id this is good or not.i’ve started to categorize everything i read as “there are sentences which i could not have written” and otherwise. this book and the last one are in group 2
