This book feels like a dark caress. No matter what horrible things are being told, my head bends as if it could get closer to the sound of it

She wasn’t a careful person, but she’d been so careful with him. He’s expensive, she’d told Mercy. Something marvelous and finely made you could look at through a shop window but never keep. But why did that have to matter? Why couldn’t she steal a little bit of him for herself, just for a while? She arched her back, pressing her body against his.

This was friendship, he supposed. You learned the rhythms of hurt and apology. You crashed through each other’s lives and hoped for grace in the final tally of the damage. He wondered what he might hope for in that reckoning. How much harm might he do and what forgiveness might be waiting?

The beginning of the book was a bit clunky and it took me a bit to get into it (partially at fault is also that Dead Beat is finally out and competing for my attention with any other book), but I'm getting invested now!
This could even be a 4 stars read with future further improvement as the writing style cleans up with experience!

When she was fighting for her life, it was strictly pass/fail. All she had to do was survive and she could call it a win.

He pulled her close, his fingers digging into her abdomen, and she could feel claws at their tips. He whispered in her ear, “I will serve you ’til the end of days.”
“And love me,” she said with a laugh, bold in the dream, unafraid.
But all he said was, “It is not the same.”
