“Huh.” The Dervish could think of at least five people he’d happily dismember, without even trying hard. Granted, four of them were probably already dead of old age so it wasn’t likely to come up, but he felt it was important to have his priorities straight.

It was a plain blade, a bit longer than a short sword, not as long as a longsword, which presumably just made it a sword-sword. It was rather wide at the base, but then, the Dervish had always preferred girth to length.

All mules were skeptics, in Learned Edmund’s experience. Sweetness the mule, so far as he could tell, did not believe in the existence of anything except food, and only the food that was directly in front of her at that. There might be food in other places, and she was, perhaps, willing to make the experiment, but she was not going to get her hopes up.

I think this about sums it up

Basically no case but a cute little sister enters the scene

Maybe a bit too teensy while reading, but it leaves a good aftertaste/lingering echo, when not actively reading

This sounds a tad ominous considering the title of the book...

AHAHAHA I love her

She looked up from her bucket, wet hair dripping day-old blood down her face. ‘I’m a lady,’ she said primly, ‘in every definition of the word.’

Kier hadn’t been lying earlier when he accused her of having blood in her hair. She was surprised he’d wanted to kiss her, but perhaps that was the thing about love. She didn’t mind him filthy post-battle. The sweat, the dirt , the blood – it all meant he was still alive.

‘I adore you,’ he said, all in a rush. ‘No – no. Listen. I … I’m in love with you. I’ve been in love with you for years, maybe forever. Sometimes it’s all I can think about, and I can’t breathe because it’s so heavy on my chest that I … I might be holding it alone, the only thing about you I can’t be certain of. It’s agony, Grey, the not knowing.’

‘Grey, beloved, you absolute fool – if that was the worst of you, then you remain a saint among us.’ He shook his head wonderingly. ‘And I have been trying to make you see me as more than your mage for six years now.’

She took all of the feelings that made her more powerful and swallowed them, not caring if they traveled through the tether. She faced the adoration and the devotion and the love, the jealousy and the agony and the longing. There was not a single word she could say to him to encompass it all, sixteen years by his side and the devastation of not having more.

She loved him in every way it was possible to love a person. And for the most part, she knew he loved her back, in his own way – but as she stared into the emptiness of the mountains, she wondered for the first time if that would be enough.

She’d never get tired of the familiarity of his shoulders, the shifting hazel of his eyes. He had his hand against the wall now, that ring from his brother shining dull silver –how many ghosts they carried, the two of them –and she imagined, aching, what that hand would feel like on her skin.

Grey pursed her lips and crossed her arms over her chest. ‘Not pretty enough for you, Captain?’
He smirked, but it didn’t reach his eyes. ‘You are a vision, even with blood clots in your hair. But I don’t know if all would share my depraved tastes.’

‘Never ask me to leave you,’ she said, voice cracking. ‘Use my power well. Protect me. It has always been this; it has always been us. Let it be us until the wars end or we find our deaths – whatever comes first.’

I think this one will be my favorire one so far!
