Gonna be honest, this will probably be a years-long effort to finish. My strategy has been to get it out from the library when I'm in between other books and read a couple essays at a time, so it's going to go slowly and I'm fine with that.

Finding out this was originally published in 1986 and was based on her 1981 thesis explains a lot..."explains", not "excuses" being the key word here.

I'm actually 100% done with this book, as in oh god I've fucking had it. I thought it was going to be OK for a while but it just took a huge nosedive in the last section. Gonna have to push myself to make it through these last 30 pages.

Yikes. Does anyone else who's read this think it peaks early, or does it get better near the end? Because I'm still waiting for it to be good (rather than just readable), and I might have to put it down unfinished if there's no promise of that...

I have decided that I can't read this book at night because I get TOO EXCITED. Also this is really fucking me up, this is convincing me that Nabokov was a genius in a way that Lolita never did. And I'm only one like, the 1st page of the poem and the 6th of the commentary?

Have you ever found a (non-fiction) book's informal, conversational tone to make it more of a slog to get through?

I don't usually "do" updates on progress like this, but this is just a reminder that I am STILL reading this several years after starting it and I actually expect to finish it this summer, if not within the next few days.
