”You killed my father.”

He spread his hands. “Your father threw himself upon my claws.”

Idk if I’m supposed to laugh at these, but I always do

Vasya did not wish to understand why the Bear raised his eyes in wonder to the night sky, and she did not want to agree with him now. But it was true.

I really appreciate how all characters are fleshed out with complex morals and goals rather than simple caricatures of good and evil; Vasya’s ability to empathize with the Bear while still holding scorn & disgust for him is a joy to read.

“An immortal sorcerer could not kill me and neither could a priest with all Moscow at his beck—what makes you think you can?”

Gosh, I aspire to be as confident as Vasya.

I’m flipping back through to catch up to where I left off, and I just adore the end of chapter 7 on page 62. I’m all for Medved fucking with Konstantin.

”There are no monsters in the world, and no saints. … One man’s monster is another man’s beloved.”

“Are you my monster then, devil?”

“I am. And your beloved too. You are not one to distinguish.”

Didn’t think I could dislike Konstantin more than the first book, even though I still pitied him & saw streaks of good within him. He was a complex character that did not always do bad.

In #2, he was a weak, disgustingly pathetic man consumed with lust and misplaced rage, desiring unwarranted vengeance.

Now I’ve no pity or sympathy for him left. He’s not wholly evil, but I don’t care; he’s the worst.

It’s just a lot of fun, what can I say? Vasya is so fun to follow, so fiercely independent.

Kasyan is a little sus to me, he’s always conveniently there. Where did he come from again, a remote village? Never before seen in Moscow? Convenient.. like the bandit captain.

Vasya heard the shriek of the dying animal. It matched her mood.

This book is so unexpectedly funny at times

I can’t decide if Konstantin is becoming creeper over Vasya, or if he’s obsessed with her as his enemy/final battle.

But he’s giving major Frollo vibes

like fire, Hellfire
