The writing is reminiscent of Norman Wilwayco. Quite a slowburn narrative pero the storyline is seemingly attractive.

What an eye-opener of how big the gender gap is in Korea. Her writing was provocative and informative but without the undertones of being preachy. Reading her reminds me of reading the works of Sayaka Murata and Mieko Kawakami. Ganda!

Kawakami reminds me of Sayaka Murata’s narration and Banana Yoshimoto’s tone of writing. Picked this up after reading her Ms Ice Sandwich, which I loved. Add to the fact that Haruki Murakami wrote the blurb and described her as the best contemporary Japanese writer.

So far, so good.

Started slow, but Abulhawa’s poetic narrative keeps you at bay, enticing you with the waves of events that, surreal as it may seem, are realities that middle eastern countries are gravely experiencing. It is nothing but death in the midst of their god-given life. I have nothing but tears to shed, and silence to grieve for their fate.

I am putting this to the like of Mistry’s A Fine Balance.

It was all rollercoaster of unimaginable emotions. PEOPLE NEED TO READ THIS. This is simply one of the best books I’ve read.

Wonderful story-telling. Reminds me of candy Gourlay’s creative imagination and how she puts children’s narrative palatable for adult consumption.

Somehow making some stride to finish the book. As funny his narrative gets, I don’t know how the fuck it is quite a slow-burn for me.

An engaging and emotional graphic novel about immigration issues (centering on one’s hopeful vision on a new world while looking back at the past that was once what they called home), the depressing life during the Indochina War, and the banalities of living one’s life both as a child and as a parent.

Promise, I think this is the first graphic novel na sobrang nagustuhan ko!

Reminds me of the preparation and the feeling behind waiting and processing papers for migration. I love how it is written in a very accessible language. I’ve been hearing about Gourlay from a friend who’s an English teacher, and I regret that it is only now that I made a decision to read her work.

A bit slow in wrapping up the first novella. But the last few pages were its strength. The narration that talks about nostalgia and sentimentality greatly relates to me; it gave a fang of melancholy that made me reminisce of all the “what-ifs” of my life. At the end of it, I wonder if we are all transitory in one’s life? Are we all just a great passing and never a thing of permanence in this life?

The shifting POV of the first story is quite confusing. There were too many parenthetical afterthoughts being drawn by each of the narrator thus making it quite a little bit verbose and noisy. This books is a running 3 at the moment.

Quite a slow start. The narration of a 10-year old might be the suspect but the story is quite getting there. Still, I can’t figure out how to sketch Ms Ice Cream Sandwich on my head to make her that interesting to the narrator.

A shift from the usual narration that I get from the other Japanese novels I’ve read. So far, this book isn’t giving me the sparks. But with just 98 pages, let’s see how it will make up.

Loved the simplicity of Murata’s narration. Big thumbs up for people who remain non-conformist to the the status quo and to everyone’s expectations.
