"Being human means yearning for more than sustenance. As much as food or shelter, we require hope."

"Driving on, they're secure in this knowledge: The last free place in America is a parking lot."

One extremely interesting idea introduced in the first seven pages is how the after the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was justified in 1993, any religious bodies were able to challenge the law just by accusing the government, as well as the modern pop culture for treating religious belief with skepticism and contempt.

Looking forward to the rest of this book.

So far so good. The author has a very quick transition from exposition to rising action that is smooth and highly technical. I found it interesting in the way he writes the transition, as I am becoming more and more interested in Sci-fi now.

Hmmm... I personally have not done a lot of research on the separation of tonal eras (pre-tonality, tonality, and post-tonality) but now I believe I should, since at some point my musicology teacher's gonna mention it LOL.

"...the mazéd world...now knows not which is which...from our dissension; We are their parents and original."

Here, Titania reveals to us that we are not in a "magical realm", but a natural world altered by the quarrels between her and Oberon. This could mean equilibrium between in magic and nature is relative, and that Man can see the effects of magic in his environment, but only as a natural failing.

Short notice:

I just completed the first short story of the five. Enjoyed it.

Since this update has too small of a word limit, I will share five separate reviews of all the stories when I am finished with the book.

After an annoyingly busy summer vacation spent in Poland at a music festival, I was relatively disappointed in the time I spent reading. But now I'm ready to start again, so my apologies for not updating in a while (not that anyone wants to see my updates or anything lol).

“Such is the power, sometimes faller malignant, sometimes benign, that Anastasia, the treacherous city, possesses; if only for eight hours a day you work as a cutter of agate, onyx, chrysoprase, your labor which gives form to desire takes from dearie it’s form, and you believe you are enjoying Anastasia wholly when you are only it’s slave”

Another example of how beautiful this book is.

“Waste is the fuel of contradiction, and contradiction activates the economy, and an active economy creates more waste.”

This is a very interesting society view of 80’s Japan. As outsiders we might look at Japan from the tourist’s eye, always impressed by it’s luscious culture. But in this short passage, Murakami has revealed a glimpse of the lenses of an insider.

“But anyway, he was dead. Nothing more. Maybe that’s the best thing about death.”

This might sound disturbing. But to be honest, I’ve always wanted to know what dying felt like. This quote sent me deeper into the abyss of curiosity and struck lots of thoughts and questions into my head that “would sound insane to a normal person”, according to my father.

"...my soul opened out, as it were, into the Infinite, and there was a rushing together of two worlds, the inner and the outer....The ordinary sense of things around me faded." This chapter is titled The Holy Instant, and it wasn't until I read this passage that I really started wanting to participate in a group meditation event or intention experiment.

"...and according to Spurgeon, Sant Luke, a Hellenic physician and reputed author of Acts who may have been present during some of the [healing] events, chose to use the Greek word "Homothumadon" to describe their method of prayer."

As I continue reading this book, I noticed that though the author talks about the science of Noetics, she also incorporates history and how Noetics actually dates back to Before Christ.

"No one in the group got any sleep. the mosquitos made sure of that."

I can really make lots of real life connections here, since I have had multiple situations in the middle of the night where I have been woken up by mosquitos. Another time was when I actually went to Kenya to do a safari donation event, and during nights that I went camping, it was similar to what Salva's group experienced.
