Just finished the interlude about Ferdowsi. I found it too orientalist considering it was written by someone with an Iranian background. It didn't even fit in with the rest of the book.

Tries to bring nuance to the perceived roles women play during armed conflict. Not sure how successful it is. Some chapters seem only to look at women from the perspective of them being mothers, daughters, or sisters; in other words, looking at women only through their relationships with other people- men specifically.
