This book is exhausting to read partly because of subject matter - the cascading disastrous effects of the Dobbs decision - but also because it jumps around so much. I get invested in someone's personal story then it's three chapters on clinics, legislatures, funding, before we get back to them.

Excellent narrative writing. book focuses on Hitler's personal vendetta against Austria's royals but of course examines roots of his anti semitism. No mention of the Treaty of Versailles & Germany's humiliation which must have infuriated Hitler, which is an slightly odd exclusion.

Laid up with a winter virus, hence reading another Grisham & again disagreeing with actions of a main character. Yes Carl Lee Henry's killing the men who brutally hurt his daughter are understandable but in the wake of one devastating trauma he's caused another for his family - their husband & father in jail facing the death penalty. Again Grisham doesn't mention this angle.

Maybe I should read something else.

I will come back to this, but I think I've overdosed on Tudors for the time being.

"It was the concept of planned obsolescence: where people once took pride in owning durable things, now they favored buying stuff—clothes, technology—that would break quickly or become unfashionable, so they could purchase more."

It was manufacturers who drove the shift to planned obsolescence, not consumer demand... Selling more stuff is a lot more attractive than buying more stuff.

I am not sure I'll continue this. I'm greatly interested in the premise - I love Los Angeles as and social history - but the writing seems clunky so far.

Only started reading this to see what it said about the autopsy but am surprised by how it's sucked me in. It was a different time. Women were seen as adjuncts and accessories, no one ever had an affair with anyone, and sedatives were doled out like tic tacs. If I'd been expected to wear a prim skirt suit and keep my mouth shut I'd have guzzled barbiturates too.

I can only read this in little bits and pieces. First, due to the author's experiences in childhood, which were dreadful. Second, because I'm very sceptical about some of the healing and wellness stuff she describes. And finally... I guess I'm a bit tired of recovery memoirs by people living in New York, for a few reasons I might address in a fuller review when I'm done.
