I’m about 80 pages in and I’m getting Steinbeck. Very unexpected, but I recognize Mr Towles supernatural ability to create characters in general, speakers in particular. A world long gone.

Was this rushed to print without proper editing? On pages 74/75, there are two jarring (to me, anyway) errors, as well as some awkwardly constructed sentences.
Maggie swats her friend with a “sheath” of papers. ‘Sheaf’ is the correct choice.
Despite the steadily growing usage that says one can feel “a pit in [her] stomach”, one actually feels something like dread “in the pit” of one’s stomach.

I’m too busy to do this justice right now. This is the kind of detective novel (oddly, both retro and meta-modern) that I’d have to read with a notebook and pen in hand to have any hope of keeping the characters straight, not least because they each have two names. 🥺
I will come back to it if I live long enough

Pretty stupid, but getting more interesting

Not sure I’ll finish this. Bit of a slog.

This is going glacially slowly, but only because I read on kindle very infrequently.
To make matters worse, my hardcover book is also a police procedural.
I’ll continue to finish this in slow motion

Typical King tropes seasoned with dabs of political scorn. Finishing it because I’m waiting for my next audiobook

I’m a bit put off by the translation, but my interest keeps me reading.

A slow but compelling read.

What a pleasure to be reading something by someone who has mastered the English language. So may of the books I’ve jettisoned lately were written without any coherence, or any consideration for the literate reader.
I suspect that, in addition, this will be a cracking good story.

Finally picked this up again when I saw it was available on Hoopla - my library’s digital service.
