I am lowkey using this book to fall asleep, but I do really enjoy when an author is an obvious nerd for something historical and specific!

sought out spufford again on the strength of cahokia jazz. This seems like good food

wow, i REALLY hate something about how this author writes sexual threat. It’s maybe on-the-nose in a way that feels cartoony? while still depicting something despicable? and finally in a way that feels commercial rather than literary, which is the least of my complaints but what i mean to express is i don’t have a weak stomach but i canNOT stand something ugly depicted in a way both salacious and hollow

I’m more interested in the plot than the characters, about whom it feels like we’re told (versus shown) a lot. Lacks texture
