Enjoying it so much! The characterisation is chef’s kiss. I do love a multigenerational story. But that Cathy though… I’m watching her. 👀

Yeah, this is scrumptious!

I’m really enjoying it. It’s strange encountering Steinbeck beyond Of Mice and Men, which I teach every year. It feels unfamiliar yet unmistakably his. The Salinas Valley anchors it, and his voice is clear. What stands out is the scale, broader and more reflective, almost philosophical compared to the tighter tragedy I’m used to.

Very sobering reading this whilst watching DT and his clown posse setting fire to the world.

It’s okay. Probably sitting around a 3 at the moment. The characterisation is fun, and I like that it’s quite a straightforward good vs bad setup. It’s also an interesting premise, and the writing has that very King quality. Beyond that though, it’s just fine.

There’s some great characterisation here, but there are still these lulls where the text slows down, and not always for any particularly compelling reason.

The Haunting of Hill House is nothing like I expected. It's not lush or “Gothic” in the traditional sense. It is much quieter and more unsettling. The dialogue constantly slips past me which makes me feel as disoriented as Eleanor.

Nell is definitely beginning to change. I'm not fond of the clever way that Jackson does that third-person limited voice giving us creepy insight into Nell's thoughts. Keep me at a distance, please!

It's interesting because at this moment, I'm noticing this childhood regression as the members of the party want to play childish games.

Yes, liking it very much now. Really enjoying the Shine, and also noticing the named places from King's other books.

Okay, okay, it’s warming up now. It had definitely lost a bit of momentum, but now we’re out of that lull of the passing years and back with our protagonist, it feels more focused again.
