Awfully visceral descriptions of violence and abuse. 😭 Not a critique, just a fact, both historically and within the story.

Yep, I was not anticipating how visceral/graphic this book was going to be when I read it either. I went to the goodreads description page mid-read after being startled by the content, and noticed for the first time it was categorized as horror. I don't normally read horror; I don't have the stomach/nervous system for it, and generally just don't enjoy it. But for this book, in the context of its brutal subject matter, I found that (surprisingly, for me) it worked and felt justified and appropriate. I respect that the author apparently never considered for a second toning down or sugarcoating the material to make it more palatable or comfortable for the reader.

Horror!? Wow, whaaat?! I didn't even think of that but yes, definitely a lot of body horror. Awful. And I agree with you, it isn't supposed to be a comfortable read, he says as much in the introduction. Did you manage to get to the end? I'm glad I'm not the only one who was not anticipating it though. I definitely respect the author's intentions here, and I hope I can push through! Thank you so much for sharing your experience.
