I can see why a lot of people are giving this negative reviews: they are ignorant of a lot of the well-established psychological and sociological research that backs up many of the author's statements.

The other reason, as I see it, is that this book is another case of a book that might look like a guide, but is really just a collection of musings / writings.

The subtitle feels really out of place. There have been 2 exercises so far, both very basic. While interesting, this is not the book to read to get into meditation or mindfulness.

Have gotten bogged down in his endless discussion of defense of class, which goes through a lot of Russian Revolution history. I've just finished The Gulag Archipelago last year, so a lot of this feels redundant.

David Hunter is 60% done with Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It
I'm not sure what I expected, but this is written in the same style as many other books in the self-help / self-improvement / pop-psychology genre. If you don't mind that style, the advice is clear and the stories of hostage negotiations liven up the tried-and-true prose.
